Overview

Uttar Pradesh in 6 days

Varanasi claims to be among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, and the river frontage makes the case better than any statistic. Eighty-odd ghats run down to the Ganga, and from a boat at first light you see the whole thing at once — pilgrims in the water, priests at their rituals, and the smoke from the cremation ghats going up as it has for centuries.

The rest of the itinerary follows the same thread. Prayagraj, where the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet at the Sangam. Ayodhya and the new Ram Mandir. And on the longer routes, the Braj country around Mathura and Vrindavan, where Krishna grew up and the temples still run on that story.

Trip highlights

  • Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat after dusk
  • A sunrise boat ride along the Varanasi ghats
  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the corridor
  • Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi at Ayodhya
  • Triveni Sangam at Prayagraj, where three rivers meet
  • Krishna Janmabhoomi at Mathura and the temples of Vrindavan

Uttar Pradesh FAQs

They are long, especially on weekends and festival days. We advise an early morning slot, arrange the route through the corridor, and can arrange a special darshan pass where it is available. Phones, cameras and leather are not permitted inside and there are lockers at the entrance.

Early, quiet and the best hour of the trip. You set off before sunrise from one of the main ghats and drift past the whole river frontage as the city wakes up — bathers, priests, laundry, the cremation ghats at a respectful distance. We use a private boat rather than a shared one.

Yes, though the crowds are substantial and the infrastructure is still catching up with the visitor numbers. We build in extra time, use a local guide who knows the current entry arrangements, and set expectations honestly about the wait. Weekdays are considerably easier than weekends.

No, and please do not try. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are working cremation grounds and photography there is both prohibited and deeply resented by families. Your guide will show you where you can look from and where the line is. Everywhere else along the river is fine.
