Overview

North East India in 6 days

The North East rewards people who give it time. Assam is river country — the Brahmaputra running wide and brown, tea gardens either side of the road, and at Kaziranga a grassland floodplain holding two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. An hour's climb south and you are in Meghalaya, which means abode of the clouds and earns it.

This itinerary pairs the two. Kaziranga at first light for the safari, then up to Shillong and Cherrapunji for the waterfalls, the limestone caves and the root bridges the Khasi grow rather than build — training ficus roots across a river over decades until they carry weight. Transfers are private and the driving days are kept short.

Trip highlights

  • Jeep safari through Kaziranga for the one-horned rhino
  • The double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat
  • Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters and Elephant Falls around Cherrapunji
  • Mawlynnong, billed as the cleanest village in Asia
  • Dawki's Umngot river, clear enough to see the riverbed
  • Umiam Lake and the Shillong ridge at sunset

North East India FAQs

The single-decker bridge at Mawlynnong is an easy ten-minute walk. The double-decker at Nongriat is not — it is roughly 3,000 steps down and the same back up, and takes most people four to six hours in total. We flag it clearly and build an alternative day for anyone who would rather not.

The jeep safari and its park fees are included where the itinerary lists them. Elephant- back safaris are booked separately on the morning, are limited in number, and we do not include them by default — the jeep gives you longer in the park and better coverage of the grassland.

Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are among the wettest inhabited places on earth. October to April is the dry, clear window and the one we recommend. Travelling in the monsoon means the falls are spectacular and everything else — roads, views, the root bridge walk — is unreliable.

No. Neither state requires an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals, and foreign nationals need only their passport and visa. Some of the neighbouring states do, so if you want to extend into Arunachal or Nagaland tell us early and we will arrange it.
