Overview

Tamil Nadu in 6 days

Tamil Nadu is the part of India where the temples were never interrupted. The gopurams at Madurai are covered in thousands of painted figures and have been repainted, generation after generation, for centuries. At Mahabalipuram the Pallavas carved whole temples out of standing granite in the seventh century and left them on the beach.

Between the temples the trip changes register completely. Puducherry keeps its French street signs, its yellow colonial houses and a seafront promenade that closes to cars in the evening. The longer itineraries carry on south to Rameswaram, across the Pamban bridge, where the temple corridor runs for something close to a kilometre.

Trip highlights

  • The Shore Temple and Arjuna's Penance at Mahabalipuram
  • Puducherry's French Quarter, Promenade and Auroville
  • Meenakshi Amman Temple at Madurai and its evening ceremony
  • The corridor at Rameswaram's Ramanathaswamy Temple
  • Pamban bridge and the drive out towards Dhanushkodi
  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple and the Marina Beach in Chennai

Tamil Nadu FAQs

Yes, and it is enforced at the major ones. Shoulders and knees covered for everyone; many Tamil Nadu temples also ask men to remove shirts in the inner sanctum. Leather belts and bags are sometimes refused. Shoes come off outside — we recommend socks, because the stone gets very hot by midday.

At most of them, yes, including Mahabalipuram and the outer precincts at Madurai. A few restrict the innermost sanctum to Hindus, Rameswaram among them. Your driver knows which is which and we brief you before each one, so nobody is turned away at the door.

It is the long leg of this trip — about four hours from Madurai, crossing the Pamban bridge onto the island. It earns the drive, but it is why we only include it on the six and seven night itineraries. On a shorter trip you would spend more of it in the car than at the temple.

Not in the swimming sense. The town beach is a rocky seafront promenade rather than sand, and it is lovely to walk at dusk when the road closes to traffic. For actual swimming we would send you a little out of town to Paradise or Auroville beach.
