Overview

Odisha in 6 days

Konark is the reason most people come, and it lives up to it. The temple was built in the thirteenth century as a colossal stone chariot for the sun god — twenty-four carved wheels along its base, seven horses straining at the front, and the whole surface covered in figures. Much of the main tower has collapsed, which somehow makes what survives more impressive rather than less.

Around it the state fills out quickly. Bhubaneswar has hundreds of temples and a set of Jain caves cut into the hillside. Puri has the Jagannath temple and a working beach town. And Chilika, an hour further on, is the largest brackish lagoon in Asia, with resident Irrawaddy dolphins and a great deal of migratory birdlife through the winter.

Trip highlights

  • Konark Sun Temple, carved as a chariot with twenty-four wheels
  • Jagannath Temple at Puri and its evening rituals
  • Irrawaddy dolphins on a Chilika Lake boat ride
  • The Lingaraja temple and Udayagiri–Khandagiri caves
  • Puri's beach and the Raghurajpur artists' village
  • Gopalpur-on-Sea on the longer itineraries

Odisha FAQs

No. Entry to the Puri Jagannath Temple is restricted to Hindus and the rule is strictly enforced at the gate. There is a well-known viewing point from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite, which gives a good view of the complex, and we take non-Hindu guests there instead.

Reasonably, near Satapada, where a resident population of Irrawaddy dolphins lives. Mornings are better than afternoons and winter is better than summer. We book a private boat rather than a shared one so the driver is not racing other boats at the animals, which is both unpleasant and counterproductive.

A heritage crafts village outside Puri where nearly every house is a working studio, mostly for pattachitra scroll painting, palm-leaf engraving and masks. It is a short detour and one of the more genuinely interesting stops on the trip. Buying direct from the artists is the point of going.

Puri's beach is right there and the itineraries leave evenings free for it, though it is a busy pilgrimage-town beach rather than a quiet one. For actual swimming and stillness, the seven-night route adds Gopalpur-on-Sea, which is far calmer.
