Overview

Jharkhand in 6 days

Jharkhand means the land of forests, and the state is essentially a wooded plateau with its edges falling away. That geography gives it the waterfalls — Dassam, Hundru, Jonha and Panch Gagh all within reach of Ranchi, each one a river dropping off the plateau rim. After the monsoon they are loud enough to hear well before you see them.

Higher up, Netarhat sits on an open plateau at around 3,700 feet with the sort of long views that get a place called a queen of anything. The longer itineraries add Deoghar, where Baidyanath Dham is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, the sal forests and elephants of Betla National Park, and Jamshedpur, India's first planned industrial city.

Trip highlights

  • Dassam, Hundru and Jonha falls around Ranchi
  • Sunrise and sunset points on the Netarhat plateau
  • Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas
  • Betla National Park on the seven-night itinerary
  • Jubilee Park and the lakes at Jamshedpur
  • Hazaribagh's wooded hills and sanctuary

Jharkhand FAQs

For the plateau light, mostly. It sits at about 3,700 feet with dedicated sunrise and sunset points looking out over forested hills, and on a clear morning it is genuinely lovely. It is a quiet, small hill station rather than a resort town — bring a book and expect an early night.

Best from September to December, right after the monsoon, when Dassam and Hundru are at full volume. By late spring several are reduced to a trickle. If waterfalls are your reason for coming, aim for October or November and we will build the route around them.

During Shravan, roughly July and August, it is one of the largest pilgrim gatherings in India and the queues run to many hours. Outside that period a darshan is straightforward. We will tell you which your dates fall into and plan the day around it rather than let you arrive unprepared.

Ranchi and Jamshedpur have comfortable mid-range business hotels. Netarhat and Betla are basic — limited options, simple rooms, and at Betla mostly forest department accommodation. We book the best available and describe it accurately rather than dressing it up.
