Thailand works because the two halves of the trip are so different. Bangkok is dense, hot and endlessly alive: gilded temples, a river full of working boats, street food that deserves its reputation, and malls the size of small towns.

Then you fly south and the pace collapses in the best way. Phuket as a base, the Phi Phi islands by speedboat, and the limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay. This is the classic first-time Thailand routing and it is popular for good reason.

Day-by-day itinerary

Airport pickup and transfer to your hotel. Evening free on Sukhumvit or at the Asiatique riverfront.

The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho's reclining Buddha, crossing the river to Wat Arun. Evening dinner cruise.

Morning flight south. Afternoon at Patong, with Promthep Cape for the sunset.

Full-day speedboat to Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and Bamboo Island, with snorkelling stops and lunch on board.

James Bond Island and the karsts by longtail, with sea canoeing through the caves at Hong Island.
