Darjeeling is a hill station that never quite stopped being a tea town. The estates still run, the narrow-gauge railway still climbs through the middle of the road, and on a clear autumn morning Kanchenjunga — the third highest mountain on earth — comes up pink behind the ridge from Tiger Hill. It is worth the four o'clock alarm.

Cross into Sikkim and the register shifts to monasteries, prayer wheels and high alpine lakes. Rumtek above Gangtok is the seat of a major Kagyu lineage; Tsomgo sits at 12,400 feet on the road towards the Nathu La pass. In October and November, most mornings. Through the monsoon, rarely. Tiger Hill means a very early start and a queue of vehicles, and the mountain still does what it likes with cloud. We will tell you honestly what your dates make likely rather than sell you a sunrise we cannot promise.

Indian nationals need a permit for Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La, which we arrange — carry original photo ID and passport photographs. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Sikkim itself, and Nathu La is closed to them entirely. Tell us your nationalities at booking so nothing is a surprise at the checkpost.

We normally book the short Darjeeling–Ghum joyride, which takes about two hours, includes the Batasia Loop and runs several times daily. The full narrow-gauge run up from New Jalpaiguri takes most of a day and is often disrupted by landslides, so we only build it in on request.

It is a completely separate route — Kolkata and then the mangrove delta by boat, looking for tigers, crocodiles and birdlife in the creeks. It is not a hill trip and does not combine with Darjeeling in under a week. Ask for it specifically and we will quote the Kolkata and Sundarbans itinerary.
