Vietnam in 7 days

Vietnam rewards travelling its length. The north is Hanoi, a French-colonial old quarter with a thousand years under it, and Ha Long Bay's limestone islands rising straight out of the water. The centre is Hoi An, a preserved trading port where the lanterns come on at dusk.

The south is Ho Chi Minh City, faster and more commercial, with the Cu Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta within a day's reach. Internal flights keep the week moving without losing days to the road.

Day-by-day itinerary

Airport pickup. Evening walk through the old quarter, Hoan Kiem lake and the Ngoc Son temple.

The Ho Chi Minh mausoleum complex, the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature and the Hoa Lo prison, ending with a water puppet performance.

Drive to the coast and board an overnight junk. Kayaking, a cave visit and dinner on deck among the karsts.

Cruise brunch, return to Hanoi and fly to Da Nang. Transfer to Hoi An for the lanterns.

The ancient town, the Japanese covered bridge and the tailor streets, with an optional Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge morning.

Fly south. Afternoon at the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the central post office.

The Cu Chi tunnels or a Mekong Delta sampan morning, then transfer to Tan Son Nhat airport.

Yes. The day trips spend most of their time in transit; the overnight gets you the bay at dusk and dawn without the crowds. Cabins are en-suite.

Two: Hanoi to Da Nang and Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City. Both are short, and they save two full days versus the train or road.

The country spans a lot of latitude. October to April is broadly the best window; the centre around Hoi An can flood in October and November, which we watch for.
