Overview

Rajasthan in 8 days

Rajasthan is best understood as a sequence of capitals, each one a different colour and each one built by a family that spent centuries not being conquered. Jaipur's pink sandstone, Jodhpur's blue old town under Mehrangarh, Jaisalmer's living fort in the Thar, and Udaipur's lake palaces.

Eight days is the right length to link all four without spending the trip in the car. Driving days are broken with stops, the hotels include at least one heritage property, and the desert night at Sam is on the itinerary rather than an add-on.

Trip highlights

  • Amber Fort and the Hawa Mahal facade at Jaipur
  • Mehrangarh Fort above the blue city of Jodhpur
  • A camel safari and overnight desert camp at Sam dunes
  • Jaisalmer's golden fort, still inhabited after 850 years
  • A boat ride on Lake Pichola past the Udaipur palaces
  • One night in a heritage haveli or palace hotel

Rajasthan FAQs

It is the minimum that works without rushing. If you have ten days we add Pushkar and Mount Abu properly; if you have five we cut it to Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur.

Jaipur to Jodhpur is around six hours, Jodhpur to Jaisalmer five, and Jaisalmer to Udaipur is the long one at roughly nine. All in a private air-conditioned vehicle with stops built in.

Swiss-tent style with attached bathrooms, dinner, and a folk music and dance evening. Luxury camps are available on request.

April to June regularly passes 45C and we do not recommend it. October to March is the season; December and January mornings can be genuinely cold in the desert.
