Overview

Madhya Pradesh in 6 days

Madhya Pradesh holds an unusual amount of India's oldest surviving work. At Bhimbetka there are rock shelters painted before anyone was writing anything down. At Sanchi a stupa commissioned by Ashoka in the third century BC still stands with its carved gateways intact. At Khajuraho the Chandelas covered their temples in sculpture nine hundred years ago and then the forest quietly hid them for centuries.

The state also has the tigers. Bandhavgarh and Kanha are among the most reliable places in the country to see one, and the longer itineraries build in two safaris rather than one, because a single drive is a coin toss. Between the monuments and the parks, Pachmarhi gives you a couple of slower days in the hills.

Trip highlights

  • The Great Stupa at Sanchi, standing since the third century BC
  • Bhimbetka's rock shelters and their prehistoric paintings
  • Khajuraho's Western Group of temples, UNESCO listed
  • Tiger safari at Bandhavgarh, on the longer itineraries
  • Pachmarhi, the only hill station in Madhya Pradesh
  • Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain and the ghats at Maheshwar

Madhya Pradesh FAQs

Bandhavgarh has one of the highest tiger densities in India, which makes it a good bet rather than a certainty. Two safaris across two days give you a realistic chance; one gives you a lottery ticket. We book the core zone where permits allow and are honest that it is wild animals in a large forest.

Yes, in practice. The erotic sculptures are a small proportion of an enormous body of carving, they are high on the outer walls, and most visitors take them as part of the whole. The temples are extraordinary architecture first. Guides handle the subject matter matter-of-factly and we can request a particular approach if you prefer.

That is a separate route out of Indore rather than a longer version of the Bhopal circuit — Ujjain, Omkareshwar and Maheshwar in five nights, built around the Jyotirlinga temples. If the temples are what you are coming for, ask for that one specifically and we will quote it.

If you want a break in the middle of a heritage-heavy trip, yes. It is a quiet colonial- era hill station with waterfalls, caves and viewpoints, and it slows the pace usefully between Bhopal and Khajuraho. If your interest is purely the monuments, we would put those nights into Khajuraho instead.
