Overview

Karnataka in 6 days

Karnataka gives you three quite different holidays and lets you choose how many to take. There is the south — Mysuru's palaces, the Brindavan Gardens, the sandalwood and silk workshops. There are the hills, where Coorg and Chikmagalur grow most of India's coffee and the air smells of it. And there is Hampi, in the north, which is something else entirely.

The shorter itineraries stay with Bengaluru, Mysuru and Coorg and do them without hurrying. Add nights and Chikmagalur comes in, then Hampi's Vijayanagara ruins — temple complexes, a stone chariot and a boulder landscape that runs for miles. Transfers are private throughout and the hotels are inspected before we put you in them.

Trip highlights

  • Mysuru Palace, floodlit on Sunday evenings and public holidays
  • Coffee and spice estate walks through Coorg
  • Abbey and Iruppu Falls, and the Dubare elephant camp
  • Chikmagalur's Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka
  • The Vittala temple and stone chariot at Hampi
  • Tipu Sultan's summer palace and the Brindavan Gardens

Karnataka FAQs

If you have seven nights, yes. Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site spread over a genuinely large area of boulder fields and temple ruins, and it needs a full day plus the travel either side. On a shorter trip we would rather give you Coorg and Chikmagalur properly than rush all three.

Sunday evenings, public holidays and through the Dasara festival, usually for about an hour after dusk. We try to place your Mysuru night accordingly when your dates allow it — tell us at the enquiry stage and we will build the route around it.

Coorg and Chikmagalur both have working plantations that take guests, ranging from simple homestays to well-appointed estate bungalows. They are quiet, usually a short drive off the main road, and the estate walk is normally included. We match the category to your budget and tell you honestly what each one is.

Karnataka's distances are moderate but the hill roads are slow. Bengaluru to Mysuru is about three hours, Mysuru to Coorg another three, and Hampi is the long one at six to seven hours from Chikmagalur. We break the longer runs with a stop and never schedule two long driving days back to back.
