Overview

Himachal Pradesh in 7 days

Himachal is where north India goes to get cold. Shimla was the British summer capital and still looks it, all pitched roofs and a pedestrian ridge with the Himalaya laid out behind. Manali, further up the Beas, is the base for the snow.

This week links the two by road, adds the Kullu valley in between, and finishes at Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, where the Tibetan government-in-exile has been since 1960. Private vehicle throughout, with permits arranged for the high passes.

Trip highlights

  • The Mall Road and Ridge at Shimla
  • Solang Valley for paragliding, skiing and the ropeway
  • The Atal Tunnel and the Rohtang Pass approach, snow permitting
  • Rafting and the Naggar Castle stop in the Kullu valley
  • The Dalai Lama temple complex at McLeod Ganj
  • Hadimba Devi temple in the Manali deodar forest

Himachal Pradesh FAQs

At Solang and Rohtang, from roughly December to April. Outside that window we take you through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, which holds snow much longer.

Yes, Rohtang Pass requires a permit with a daily vehicle quota, and it closes entirely in deep winter. We apply on your behalf and always have the Atal Tunnel route as the fallback.

Chandigarh works for Shimla, Bhuntar for Manali and Gaggal for Dharamshala. Many travellers arrive Chandigarh and depart Gaggal, which this route is built for.

They are winding, and the Shimla to Manali leg is a long day. We use experienced hill drivers and break the journey. Carry motion sickness tablets if you are prone.
