Gujarat in 6 days

Gujarat covers a lot of ground and does not much resemble itself from one end to the other. Ahmedabad is a working city with a UNESCO-listed old quarter, Gandhi's ashram on the riverbank and stepwells cut seven storeys into the ground. Two hours south, the Statue of Unity stands 182 metres over the Narmada, and you can ride a lift into its chest.

Then the itinerary turns west. Gir holds the only wild Asiatic lions left anywhere, in dry teak forest that looks nothing like the grassland people expect. Beyond it the coast road runs to Somnath, rebuilt many times over and facing straight out to sea, and on to Dwarka. Transfers are private and the driving days are planned around the safari slots.

Gujarat FAQs

Permits are issued online in fixed time slots and sell out well ahead, particularly at weekends and in holiday season. We book yours as soon as your dates are confirmed. Sightings are never guaranteed — it is a wild population in open forest — but the density in the core zone is high and most morning safaris are lucky.

The park shuts to visitors from around 16 June to 15 October each year for the monsoon and breeding season. If your dates fall inside that window we will still take you to the Devalia interpretation zone, which stays open, and we will tell you plainly that it is an enclosure rather than the open park.

Yes. Alcohol is prohibited for residents and is not served in ordinary hotels or restaurants. Visitors from outside Gujarat can apply for a temporary permit through licensed hotel outlets in the larger cities. We would rather say this up front than have it surprise you on arrival.

The statue itself needs about half a day including the viewing gallery lift, which is timed and ticketed. The rest of the Kevadia site — the valley of flowers, the jungle safari park, the evening laser show on the dam — fills the other half comfortably if you want it. We build it either way.
