Overview

Chhattisgarh in 6 days

Chhattisgarh is the part of central India that most itineraries skip, which is precisely the argument for going. Chitrakote is the widest waterfall in the country — a horseshoe on the Indravati that runs nearly 300 metres across after the monsoon — and on most days you will share it with a handful of people rather than a coach park.

South of Raipur, Bastar is tribal country with a living craft tradition: Dhokra metal casting done by the lost-wax method, wrought iron, terracotta, and weekly markets where the trade is real. The Kanger Valley adds limestone caves and a second set of falls, and the longer itineraries pick up Barnawapara's wildlife and the excavated temple complex at Sirpur.

Trip highlights

  • Chitrakote Falls, the widest in India, in full flow after the rains
  • Tirathgarh Falls and the Kanger Valley National Park caves
  • Bastar's weekly tribal markets and Dhokra metal craft
  • Kutumsar and Kailash limestone caves
  • Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary on the longer routes
  • The seventh-century Lakshman Temple at Sirpur

Chhattisgarh FAQs

Chitrakote is at its widest and loudest from July to October, right after the monsoon, when it genuinely earns the Niagara comparison people make. From January the flow drops and it becomes several separate curtains of water instead of one sheet — still handsome, much less dramatic. October is the best compromise with the weather.

No, and that is the appeal. Chhattisgarh sees a fraction of the visitors its neighbours do, so the sites are uncrowded and the tribal markets are not staged for tourists. The trade-off is simpler hotels and longer drives than a Rajasthan or Kerala trip. We are upfront about both.

We think so, when it is done properly. We use local guides from the region, visit the weekly haats where trade is happening anyway, and ask permission before photographs. We do not run village visits that amount to walking through people's homes. If a community has asked not to receive visitors, we do not go.

The tourist circuit — Jagdalpur, Chitrakote, Tirathgarh and the Kanger Valley — is routinely operated and we run it with local drivers who know the roads. We keep to daylight driving, stay on the main routes, and follow current district advisories. If anything changes before your dates we will tell you and rebuild the itinerary.
