At Bodh Gaya there is a tree, and a stone slab beside it marking where the Buddha is said to have sat until he understood what he was after. The Mahabodhi Temple around it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and on any given morning you will hear chanting in Thai, Tibetan, Sinhalese and Japanese within a few metres of each other. It is a quietly extraordinary place.

The rest of the circuit is the world that produced it. Nalanda ran as a residential university from the fifth century until it was destroyed in the twelfth, and its excavated brick monasteries and lecture halls still cover a substantial site. Rajgir has the hills where the Buddha preached, Vaishali an Ashoka pillar still standing where he gave his last sermon.

Anyone drawn to the Buddhist circuit, and anyone interested in early Indian history. You do not need to be a Buddhist to find Bodh Gaya moving or Nalanda remarkable. That said, it is a heritage and pilgrimage route rather than a scenic one, and we would rather set that expectation than have it disappoint.

Bodh Gaya has genuinely good options, including several monastery guesthouses and a few international-standard hotels, because it draws pilgrims from across Asia. Patna is adequate business-hotel territory. Rajgir and the smaller stops are simpler. We tell you the honest category for each rather than a uniform star rating.

Moderate. Nalanda's excavated ruins cover a large site and take an hour or two on foot over uneven brick. Griddhakuta at Rajgir is an uphill walk of about twenty minutes, though a ropeway serves the Shanti Stupa on the neighbouring hill. Everything else is short walks from the vehicle.

Yes, and it is a natural pairing — the seven-night itinerary already runs Bihar into Sarnath and Varanasi, which is where the Buddha gave his first sermon. If you want more time on the Uttar Pradesh side, we can rebalance the nights or quote the Varanasi and Ayodhya route instead.
